Stuart's Draft
Stuart's Draft
July 2014
graphite on wall
approx. 120 x 60 inches
"Stuart's Draft" is a site-specific drawing created July 9--11, 2014 at the Greater Reston Arts Center in Reston, VA. The drawing is one view through August 23, 2014, and will be destroyed/painted over at the end of the exhibition.
"Stuarts Draft" was created in memory of my of my friend and mentor, Stuart Downs (1950-2013).
Stuart was a poet, JMU Gallery Director, and Professor of Museum Studies.
My site-specific drawings are temporary artworks requiring the viewer to be in specific place at a specific time in order to truly experience the work. Strokes of graphite evoke plumes of smoke or light reflected on the surface of water, keeping with the artwork's transitory nature.
The components offer a metaphor for evolution- moving the viewer through creation, existence, and eventual destruction.
